Are compression garments covered by insurance?

Three different answers to one question

Compression coverage confuses people because the same garment can be covered, partly covered, or not covered at all depending on the diagnosis behind it. There are three doors, and it matters which one you are standing in front of.

Door one: lymphedema

Since 2024, Medicare has a dedicated benefit for lymphedema compression — a change in the law after years of these garments not being covered at all. It covers standard and custom-fitted garments, daytime and nighttime styles, with replacement on a schedule, when you have a lymphedema diagnosis and a prescriber's order with measurements.

If you were told years ago that Medicare does not cover lymphedema garments, that answer is out of date. It is worth asking again.

Door two: a venous ulcer being treated

Compression used as part of treating an open venous stasis ulcer is covered under the wound-care rules rather than as a garment benefit. The wound, its treatment and the compression have to be documented together — and venous ulcers generally heal with compression and do not heal without it, so this door matters clinically as well as financially.

Door three: everyday and preventive use

Gradient stockings for tired aching legs, travel, work on your feet, or preventing problems you do not yet have are generally not covered by Medicare. Plenty of plans do not cover them either. We will tell you that plainly up front rather than letting a claim bounce — and quote the private price for exactly the garment you need, so you can decide.

Whichever door: fit decides whether it works
