Does Medicare cover catheters?
Yes — intermittent, indwelling and external catheters are covered when the condition and the quantities are documented. Here is how the rule works.
The short answer
Yes. Urinary catheters and their supplies are covered by Medicare under the prosthetic benefit when you have a documented condition — retention or incontinence — that is expected to persist rather than resolve shortly. Most other plans follow a similar shape.
‘Expected to persist’ is a policy phrase, not a life sentence. It means the condition is long-term as far as anyone can tell now; it does not require anyone to prove it is forever.
What is covered
- Intermittent catheters, in a quantity that matches the catheterization frequency your prescriber orders — the frequency drives the quantity, which is why the order has to state it.
- Indwelling (Foley) catheters with drainage bags, both bedside and leg styles, on a replacement schedule.
- External (condom) catheters for men, as an alternative to an indwelling line.
- Insertion supplies and lubricant, matched to the catheter type.
Where documentation decides the outcome
- Coudé tips, hydrophilic coatings and closed systems are covered when there is a documented reason a standard catheter does not work for you — difficult passage, recurrent infections, a clinical circumstance your record supports. The reason has to be written down, not just true.
- A change in frequency changes your covered quantity. If your clinician has changed your schedule, the order needs updating before the next shipment.
- Reuse is not a coverage strategy. Single-use catheters are covered in single-use quantities precisely so nobody is washing and reusing them — reuse causes infections.
