Serving Coral Gables

Coral Gables is a planned historic city with strict architectural and permitting controls, and a housing stock that includes a great many homes built in the 1920s and 1930s.

Historic homes are a specific practical problem for equipment: narrow doorways, tight stair turns, small bathrooms and original fittings that were never designed around a wheelchair or a lift. Anything requiring installation — a grab bar into original tile, for instance — may also touch the city's permitting rules, and we will tell you honestly what we can and cannot do rather than leaving a bar in a box.

Discharges and referrals

Discharges from Doctors Hospital and the surrounding Baptist Health and University of Miami facilities are regularly scheduled here.

Hospitals and health systems are named here only to describe the geography we serve and the discharges we commonly schedule around. Naming a facility does not imply a contract, a partnership, an affiliation or preferred-supplier status with it, and none is claimed.

Getting it into an older home

Most failed deliveries in Broward and Miami-Dade are not clinical problems and not insurance problems. They are building problems — and every one of them is avoidable if we know about it before the van is loaded.

  • Doorway widths in older homes. Houses built in the 1920s and 1930s frequently have doorways narrower than anything built since. Measure before we order a wheelchair or a bed.
  • Stair turns and landings. Original staircases are often tight, and a bed frame that clears the front door may not clear the turn.
  • Bathroom size. Original bathrooms are small; a commode or a transfer bench that fits the catalog may not fit the room. Give us the dimensions.
  • Installation into original tile or plaster. Grab bars need a stud or proper backing. We will tell you honestly what we can fit and what needs a contractor rather than leaving a bar in a box.
  • City permitting and historic controls. Anything structural may need approval. Better to know before than after.
  • A phone that gets answered. The most common cause of a failed delivery anywhere.

Give us the building name and the association when you order and we will do the access work before the delivery is scheduled, not after one fails.

Hurricane season and powered equipment

Broward and Miami-Dade sit in the highest-exposure part of the state, and the coastal strip is in the first evacuation zones to be called. If your equipment plugs in — CPAP, nebulizer, feeding pump, alternating-pressure mattress, power wheelchair — that is a plan you need to have made in June, not on the day the cone shifts.

Register with your county emergency management Special Needs Registry in advance, know whether your device runs from a battery, and keep two weeks of consumables where you can reach them. If a storm is forecast and your resupply is due that week, call us early — we would far rather ship you ahead of schedule than fail to ship you at all.

Worth knowing

A large share of what we deliver here is bath safety and fall prevention for people determined to stay in a house they have lived in for forty years. That is a good goal and the equipment is what makes it safe.

Not sure where to start?

Call us and tell us what happened — a surgery, a new diagnosis, a discharge date, a supply you keep running out of. We will tell you what is usually needed, check your benefits, and ask your prescriber for the order if you do not have one yet.
